As time goes on all holidays loose track of their purpose. Halloween for example was original like the day of the dead for the Spanish, all those who passed away could visit the world of the living for one day; not all the spirits were good however which started the need to scare them away. Thanksgiving was meant to be a day of literal thanks because the Indians had supplied ways of surviving that the settlers were not familiar with; it has since become a day to veg and over indulge in food. Christmas was meant to symbolize a day for Christians to recruit new followers and celebrate the birth of their future savior; it has since become a day of spending endless amounts of money. Valentine's day has had multiple purposes, originally a roman day of fertility and then a Christian saint who secretly wed couples because soldiers weren't allowed to; now it's a hallmark holiday full of romance (I won't stress my true opinion but if you wish watch Foamy the Squirrels rant on YouTube, he about sums it up). St. Patrick's day was meant to celebrate the removal of the "snakes" from Ireland; now it's a day drinking and wearing green.
Holidays have come a long way since they were first created. I hope you enjoy your day of excessive eating and pointless egg searching while the meanings behind what we do slowly disappear into oblivion forever.
And may Christ never have to be reincarnated again to experience what this celebratory day has become.
